Trump’s got enough trouble with subversive Democrats. But the real threat to his presidency comes from traitors within the Republican Party.
In fact, it seems that one of the leaders of a new conspiracy to oust the president is sitting in Trump’s Cabinet.
Knowing that they’re unlikely to get him impeached, these Republican schemers are instead looking to take the incredible step of denying an incumbent president his party’s nomination in the next election.
From The New York Times:
President Trump’s first term is ostensibly just warming up, but luminaries in his own party have begun what amounts to a shadow campaign for 2020 — as if the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue weren’t involved.
In the wider world of conservative Trump opponents, William Kristol, editor at large of The Weekly Standard, said he had begun informal conversations about creating a “Committee Not to Renominate the President.”
“We need to take one shot at liberating the Republican Party from Trump, and conservatism from Trumpism,” Mr. Kristol said.
Breitbart followed up by pointing out that Kristol had revealed in his own newsletter a recent meeting with failed Jeb Bush consultant Mike Murphy on just how to accomplish his goal.
Kristol wrote that he and Murphy “ended up in a long session plotting the salvation of the GOP and conservatism from Donald Trump. We’ll see whether anything comes of it.”
What’s really dangerous about all of this is that Kristol has an “inside man” in his long-time political ally H.R. McMaster, Trump’s current national security adviser. Assuming he’s being fed inside information, Kristol’s plot has a much greater chance of success.
If true, this would be nothing short of a betrayal of the American voters. Trump managed to defeat the Republican establishment’s leading candidates precisely because most Republicans didn’t want THEM in the White House. They wanted Trump.
